After spending 30 years as an architect and experienced professional, TE MANAWA founder Barbara Draper turned to yoga and mindfulness meditation to support her through a difficult period of her life. While Barbara had practiced yoga for her whole adult life, there was a turning point where she required more understanding of the body / mind connection and the neural effects that yoga and meditation bring.
During yoga, your brain releases chemicals that not only help you relax but also lower your stress and anxiety levels. These include oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. Each of these functions in their own way, helping you calm down and feel better.
There has been a growing body of research carried out into the neurological effects of meditation. The findings have shown that meditation leads to increased activation in the frontal and sub-cortical brain regions, which control the ability to pay attention and also the regulation of emotions. This supports the idea of meditation being beneficial to those suffering from stress, anxiety and depression.
